| Introduction:
The CEAT Cricket Rating for
Domestic Cricket will come into operation in
the 2003-04 season and will take into account every
first-class match played by India’s top 15
state teams in the Ranji Trophy; India’s
premier domestic cricket competition.
CEAT Cricket Rating for Domestic Cricket
will be a unique ‘first’ of its kind. There
is no annual cricket rating system in the world that
accords points to performances in domestic cricket and
will award the toppers in different categories (overall;
batting; bowling; fielding) at the end of the cricket
season in April.
Format:
A total of 27 teams participate in the
annual Ranji Trophy. They are divided into two broad
groups; the Elite Group and the Plate Group.
The top 15 cricket teams in the country
constitute the Elite Group. These sides are further
divided into two groups; one comprising eight sides
and the other including seven teams.
The round-robin league is followed by
two semi-finals that feature the top two sides from
each sub-group A and B. The semi-finals are followed
by the final; the winner of which becomes the Ranji
Trophy champion.
A total of 52 matches are played in the
Elite Group.
The Plate Group comprises 12 teams that
are further divided into two groups of six sides each.
A total of 33 matches are played in the Plate Group.
Applying
the rating:
The teams in the Elite Group are more
or less equally strong; while the Plate Group invariably
comprises a couple of teams that are much stronger than
the others. For instance; a strong team like Karnataka
that won the Ranji Trophy in 1997-98 and 1998-99 was
relegated to the Plate group in the 2002-03 season because
of a lean trot in 2001-02. The players representing
the stronger sides in the Plate Group thus have a greater
chance of collecting more CCR points than their counterparts
in the Elite Group.
Hence, CEAT Cricket Rating for Domestic
Cricket will rate only the Elite group matches.
Points
system:
The same as for international cricket.
Method:
Scorecards of the 52 Elite matches will
be examined and points accordingly awarded.
Awards:
Elite Group:
- Cricketer
of the Season - overall topper - trophy

- Batsman
- trophy and Rs. 50000.
- Bowler
- trophy and Rs. 50000.
- Fielder
