The Indian team was resurrected in a spectacular fashion by V.V.S Laxman, who scored a magnificent 281 - the highest individual score made by an Indian in Test cricket.

He also became the first Indian to score over 250 in a Test innings. His and Rahul Dravid's heroic batsmanship helped the Indian side amass a total of 657-4 in the second innings. The Aussies who were set a target of 384, collapsed for a paltry 212, thus giving a resurgent Indian side and unexpected victory by 171 runs. Laxman's innings inspired his teammates to win not only the Kolkatta Test but also the Series.
